FREMONT, CA - This is one of my favorite moderate to strenuous hikes in the central bay area, especially in the late winter / early spring when the hills are bright green. There are views all the view up and down the trail, and from the summit a 360 view from the South Bay to San Francisco to the east side of the East Bay hills. This is also one of the best views of the salt ponds in the southern San Francisco Bay.
This hike starts at the trailhead at the end of Stanford Ave in Fremont, see below for a map. The summit is on the Peak Trail and there are a few different routes there from the trailhead, I suggest a loop that includes the Ohlone Wilderness Trail as well as the Horse Heaven Trail. Also be aware there's very little shade on any trails in the park, so be prepared with sunblock and/or a broad brimmed hat. Information on Mission Peak Regional Preserve and a trail map can be found on the East Bay Regional Park District's website.
While you're in the area, Fremont has a large South Asian community, so given some of the indian restaurants a try. My favorite indian grocery store is also in Fremont, India Cash and Carry, a great place to pick up some snacks. Happy trails!
